Anime of the Year 2013 (20 to 16)

Continued from Anime of the Year 2013 (25 to 21)

Now I continue my rankings for anime of year 2013 with twenty to sixteen.  If you haven’t read the first part of this five part series here’s Anime of the Year 2013 (25 to 21).  Just for clarification, anime movies aren’t factored into my list of series as it’s limited to only TV anime that finished airing in 2013–including series that started in fall 2012 and finished in winter 2013.  Similarly, ongoing series from fall 2013 that won’t finish until the end of the winter 2014 season won’t be on this list, either.

Izumiko at her shrine20. Red Data Girl

Supernatural anime based around Shinto always intrigue me.  RDG also tells the story of the reluctant hero, who finds there’s more to his role of protector than just fighting off the forces of darkness.

Touma, Haruki and Setsuna get ready for their last song19. White Album 2

It’s always a real treat to watch a sequel to a good idea run with its source material in a completely different direction and come up with something that completely eclipses its predecessor.

Lucy Yamagami is flustered18. Servant x Service

All too often, romantic comedies feel like they were just rolled off an assembly line.  But just changing the setting from a high school to a city hall office creates a domino effect that mixes up all the old boring tropes into something new and interesting.

Riki and Rin look out the window17. Little Busters & Refrain

A part of me feels bad for ranking a Key anime this low.  But even the best developed characters, a colorful and crisp art style and fantastic music can’t cover up writing that’s just…pretty good.

Karen, Youko, Alice, Shinobu and Aya in a field of flowers16. Kiniro Mosaic

A moe anime that explores real differences between Japanese and western cultures.  I couldn’t stop laughing at everything they got right about culture shock as well as the language jokes that resulted in some cute Engrish.
